A letter to my daughter

Dear Cecelia-
I forget sometimes that you are only 1 (almost 2), you use so much enthusiasm when you speak, along with your many hand gestures and facial expressions. Sometimes I feel like I'm discussing eating your corn with an adult. No matter, you are full of personality and energy, which the first you get from you Mama and the second you get from you Dad.
It has been such a joy watching you develop into the small person you are today, it almost is hard to take in sometimes. To see you sitting outside, eating watermelon, half naked, having a conversation with you Dad, about the bird in the tree or the squirrel on the deck. You only sit with your Dad that way, and I'm glad you two have that special bond.

We are celebrating Independence Day this weekend, and like every year, it makes me think about  America and the people of this country and what they have been through to keep this an on going tradition. We are in the middle of a war, which I pray will soon be over before you are old enough to remember. Our country is coming out of the second worst depression, which I hope you will never have to endure. I've seen some horrible things happen in this country and I just hope you will never have to see buildings crumbling to the ground, people jumping out of windows 80 stories high, planes crashing with innocent people on them. I hope your father and I have the ability to always keep you safe and secure in our small town in the Midwest. I hope you see that as an advantage to your upbringing. Because in our eyes we are keeping your innocence  in tact for as long as it should be.

I hope you always enjoy watching the fireworks and the parade with your family and friends close by, that your summers are filled with memories of happiness and exhaustion at the end of the day. These are things your father and I wished for you while you only a glimmer in our eyes, and now to see them happening right in front of us is truly a blessing.

Love-
Mama
