This weekend was a rough one for Nate. He had to dig up our sewer system, again for the 3rd time! We are confident that the problem is fixed and that will be the last time we will dig up our front yard. If you live in Iowa you know that the temps were in the 90's and with the heat index it was even higher. This is not how I want my husband to be spending his weekends, especially since he spends his days outside for work in the Iowa heat already. Weekends we save for fun activies or hanging out and relaxing. NOT working your tail off in the sweltering heat. Be that has it may, things have to be done and since I'm little help in the area of running an excavator or even shovel, this was on Nate's shoulders. Luckily, Nate has so many great and hard working guys in his life that were willing to show up and help. Even if that meant just entertaining him and making it seem less like work and more like a social event. This is what drives my husband, being around people he loves, good people with good intentions. People like him.
I made sure to stay out of the way and make sure the kids were out of the way for the most part. I get frustrated with projects like these, because I want to see progress in a really unrealistic amount of time. Also I don't like seeing Nate work so hard in the heat, his clothes were completely soaked with sweat before noon.
Last night around 10pm he finished up and the last guys had headed home and he was just cleaning up outside on his own. The kids were in bed so I wandered out there to take a look, even though it was clearly to dark to see how the yard was looking. Nate was so excited to be done, not only that but mainly he just kept talking about how great the guys were that had came out to help him. Only my husband would be in such good spirits after such a "shitty" weekend. He knew he had to be up by 6:30am to get to work the next day and spend another hot and humid day working but he just kepting telling me on thing after another about how great everyone was that came over. It made me smile. People are always good in Nate's eyes and I never could grasp that idea. To me people were selfish and took care of themselves before helping others. I mean I don't believe everyone is like this but a huge percentage of people are, unfortunately this is the world we live in. However, in Nate's eyes people want to help, people are naturally good hearted and want to help out their neighbors. I saw that this weekend, others selflessly helping another. I know my husband is a good man, I know people truly enjoy his company and I decided right there in the middle of my dirt covered front hard, in 90 degree heat that I will start trying to see the good in people rather then brushing them off.
I'm thankful for a husband who is always showing me love, always teaching me how to be a better person, without even giving me a lesson. I'm luckly, I've always known this.
I'm not sure where I'm going with all this, except I'm really happy our sewer is fixed, that our small community is pretty amazing and that the people my husband chooses to surrond himself with are people who reflect the type of man he is, which is a good one.
