Declutter

Have any of you just felt completly overwhelmed by the huge amount of stuff you have?

This is what I'm feeling today. Between the mister and myself, then adding the small one into the mix we have accumulated more stuff then we would need in a hundered years, it's getting to the point of no return.

We live in a 2 bedroom craftsmen bungalow style home, it's perfect for us size wise. However, it was not built in the generation of "must have every new thing known to man". It was built during a much more simpler time.

Well low and behold yesterday on Oparah (which by the way I never watch) there was an orginizational expert on talking about how the way your house is, is a subconscious manner of how you are in life. YIKES! If thats the case we are in big trouble!

Of course I take little to heart on talk television (except for entertainment news of course haha), but it didn't make me take a look around our home and I think this summer I'm going to start stripping away the excess that we live in and get down to the simple joys of our home. I think it will help both C and I concentrate on what truly makes us happy in our home, and when the hubs comes home he will not be overwhelmed with mass toys and junk spread about by the young one.

Of course I wont leave nothing but furniture and food, I'm not going crazy by any means, but have you ever just felt like so much that you own you could completely do with out? This is very true for us, especially when it comes to C's toys. She probably only plays with about 5 things all day. The rest I think overwhelms her beyond her little mind. To be honest the only toys I ever remember playing with is one board game (Yatzse sp?), a few barbies, our American Girl dolls, and the doll houses my dad built for my sister and I. During the summer though we were kicked outside to entertain ourselves, or sent with my Dad to help him couch his track and football players (which was always fun).

So beginning this weekend, I'm going to start boxing up the unneccessaries in our home and most likely giving them to my mother-in-law who always welcomes things at her home, or sending them to goodwill where another family will make much better use of them.

I believe I will start with C's toys first then move on to clothing. It must be said that Mr.Stanley has a dresser with 6 drawers that are bursting at the seems of clothes that over half he never wears, such a waste.

Now to set the record straight, I would like to mention that these things that are overwhelming our home are not junk! They are things that have either been given to us or been bought by us. And most of them have given our duaghter much joy over the 2 years of her life, however now she knows what she wants to surrond herself with and the rest is collecting dust and taking up space, in our already spaceless home.

And I found this picture (however, I'm not sure who to give credit to) but it is fabulous and would love it to replace my kitchen!

my favorite part would be the farmhouse sink and green cabinets!

  1. Dan and I have very little clutter.... partly bc is drives my crazy and the other is bc when the boys were little I was afraid that they would break something, put something into their mouths or otherwise... I have to say-- I am much happier now that the boys are old enough to keep the toys in two main places -- their rooms... and one LARGE chest in the living room that opens and closes. When theya re playing it is open... when they are not you would never know that there are toys in the room at all.

    good luck!
