Today I was able to wake up in my bed, knowing my children were safe in theirs. I have the privilege and the right to get up everyday and believe what I choose and raise my children how I see fit. I have no worries of immediate danger or have any fear my children would be harmed on their way to school based on their background. I get the pleasure of enjoying my mornings and evenings with my family and look forward to laid back weekends with friends.
I would not be allowed many of my everyday activities if it weren’t for all those men and women who fight for us everyday. Today on the anniversary of 9/11 I make sure to take a moment to remember what so many innocent people had to sacrifice, for all those first responders who with out much thought ran into save those who could not save themselves. I remember watching in my homeroom as people were jumping out of buildings to their death. They will never again be woken up by the giggles of their children sneaking into their bed or kiss their spouses one last time or grab that beer with their friends.
I know I should remember these acts of courage more than just on this one day a year and sometimes I get hit with the remembrance of this day. There will never be enough prayers or tears to make the heartache of those that have lost any easier. The only thing that I can do is keep them alive through remembering them and passing the importance and the tragedy of that day to my children.
Many other tragedies of come and gone since that day 11 years ago, but none that affected so many innocent people. Over 3,000 lost their lives and with those tragic acts our country went to war, which ended up sending brave men and women overseas to fight for the freedom that so many of us take for granted everyday.
I’m grateful for my freedom and for those that continue to fight for it, and I will always remember those whose freedom was taken from them on this day.
